About the FasterMoney Card

The FasterMoney Discover Prepaid Card is more than just a way for you to receive your tax refund. It’s a reloadable prepaid card account with low fees that you can use all year long. It can be used at stores, online, to pay bills and to get cash at ATMs.  Best of all, Direct Deposit your paycheck or benefits check for free and avoid costly check cashing fees! Because this is a prepaid card, there is no risk of overdraft fees.

Note: If you obtained your Card through your tax preparer, certain functions such as reloading and usage outside of the United States are available only after identity verification has been completed.

No, this is not a credit card. A credit check is not required to get a card, though you are subject to identification verification.

In order for your Card to be fully verified, you would have provided Pathward either online or by phone or given to your tax preparer, key identifying information like name, address, phone, DOB and SSN. There are certain thank you or bonus cards that are given to consumers that have a limited amount of money on them and are not considered “identity verified”. Those cards cannot be used outside of the U.S. and cannot be reloaded.

It’s easy to enroll. When you open a card, we will ask for your name, street address, date of birth and other information that will allow us to verify your identity. We may also ask to see a copy of your driver’s license or other documents at any time.

Note: If you obtained your Card through your tax preparer, certain functions such as reloading and usage outside of the United States are available only after identity verification has been completed.

You need to be 18 years old to get a FasterMoney Card.

No; you’ll need to activate your card for security purposes. You can call the number on the back of your card to activate your card and setup your 4 digit PIN. Your PIN must be setup in order for you to make debit and ATM transactions with your card.

You can use your card everywhere Discover® cards are accepted worldwide. There are some restrictions for fraud protection. See your Cardholder Agreement for specific information.

Note: If you obtained your Card through your tax preparer, certain functions such as reloading and usage outside of the United States are available only after identity verification has been completed7.

Yes; after you set up a 4-digit PIN you can withdraw cash from ATMs. You can set up your PIN by calling the number on the back of your Card. For fees associated with ATM withdrawals, see Cardholder Agreement.

If you forget your PIN, you will need to call Customer Service at the number on the back of your card and you can reset your PIN through our automated call system.

The merchant may have attempted to process the purchase for a greater amount than what is available on the card. If a purchase is for more than your available balance, you may be able to perform a “split-tender transaction,” which means using multiple payment methods to pay for your transaction, as further described below.

Note: Download our Manage My Card app3 so you know your balance at any time.

If you wish to use your FasterMoney Card to make a purchase for more than your available funds, depending on the merchant’s policy, you may be able to use your card toward a portion of the final purchase price and then use another form of payment to pay the remaining balance. This is called a “split-tender transaction,” because you are splitting the final transaction amount between your card and another form of payment. Before you request a split-tender transaction, you will need to know your card balance. Then, you must ask the merchant if two forms of payment will be accepted. If the merchant agrees, request that the amount on your card be used as the first form of payment, and then use another form of funds to pay the remaining balance. Some retailers will only allow a split-tender transaction if the second form of payment is cash or check. Online and most mail-order merchants do not permit split-tender transactions. We do not guarantee that merchants will accept two forms of payment, such as two prepaid cards.

Since this is a prepaid card, you may only use the amount of funds you have available on your card. If you create a negative balance on your card, you are responsible for repayment of the negative balance. Some merchants can run a split-tender transaction, which will allow you to pay a portion of your purchase with your card and the remaining balance with another form of payment.

There are no overdraft fees because you can only spend what you load on the prepaid card.

Yes; you may use your card at a restaurant the same way you would at any other merchant. However, it is common for service-oriented merchants to automatically factor in an additional percentage (often times as much as 20 percent more than the purchase price) to cover any gratuity you may leave on the card. You should ensure that your card has an available balance that is 20 percent greater than your total bill.

Yes; you can rent a car with your card. However, the merchant may put a pre-authorization on the card to hold the reservation, and it may be for much more than the amount of the car rental to cover the cost of gas, car damage, etc. While that pre-authorization is in place, you will not have access to those funds. We recommend that you speak to the car-rental merchant to understand how it handles reservations before using your card to rent the car.

Like restaurants and other service-oriented merchants, companies associated with travel services may automatically factor in an additional percentage to cover incidental charges that you might incur. Each merchant varies in the amount it is able to over-authorize. To prevent a decline of your card, we advise you to check with the merchant in advance of making the transaction to determine its policy for over-authorizing.

Your card can be used at automatic fuel dispensers. However, an authorization amount, which could be as much or more as your final gas purchase, will be added to your account. This authorization may remain on your account for several days. To prevent this, we suggest that you pay for your gas at the service station counter.
